Fantasy Creature Design

Project for "Imaginatomy" is to invent a new creature, sculpt it, and create an environment for it. Thus was born "Equus Pteropus" the "Terror Horse" of the early Oligocene era, here seen as a huge fossil museum display.

Made with sculpey clay, baked, then painted with a black base then a layer of green patina. Display background is my digital painting.

Cool and Warm Light
Exercise was to design an exterior and paint it according to cool and warm lighting conditions.

This was a limited palette study done with just 2 complementary colors plus black and white. I tried to use warm/cool contrast to bring in more variation and applied an analytical approach to grouping values and hues. The hues are mostly desaturated, which is closer to a realistic rendering.

more sketches and redesigns

Something about fighter jets that makes one's blood tingle. These redesigns wouldn't actually fly, but it's fun to give your imagination a try.

Fish have the most interesting forms and colors. I'm trying to get some redesigns done but having too much fun just playing with gouache.

animal drawings

Drawing animals at the zoo was a challenge but really fascinating. I tried to take all the several animals I studied to combine them all into a redesigned animal.

BuG mAnIA!

Bug have cool interlocking parts, once you get past the "ick" factor!

Happy Halloween!

Anyone for some weird candy?! Mmmm, tastes like bugs...

Now is the time to think of the ghosts of pets long past, perhaps to haunt us at last!

observational sketching

This work is done for visual communication 4 at ACCD.

These were done at the LA Arboretum, a much better place to draw than Huntington Gardens by far. Less people, more interesting flora, fauna, and architecture, quiet and no snobby staff or gestapo security.
Ducks are fun creatures to observe, really like their aerodynamic shape and their gestures.

Sketched this directly in pen with out any lay-in. This technique requires a thorough understanding of form and visual analysis and is great drawing practice.

This is an excerpt from my sketchbook for landscape class.

Did this surfing dog in Adobe Illustrator as a color study. This dog has a "crusin'' attitude. Next time I want to do a very, very scared dog about to be engulfed by a tsunami!
